HI, I’M ZACH!

MORE about me

I am an attorney, former D1 athlete, cycle instructor, gym bro, and gay dad.

Nutrition has been something I've considered highly relevant to my life. I had a prolific swimming career, ran marathons, and was a competitive CrossFitter, which required learning how to fuel my performance. But I also used food as a method to manage my anxiety, stress, and mental health. With diagnosed anxiety, ADHD, and depression, I regularly used food as a way to find a sense of comfort or to seek some equilibrium.

But I also try to maintain a lot of responsibilities, working multiple jobs, being a single dad, and trying to keep a social life while traveling to gay events across the world. I can't say that I think perfect "balance" is possible, but I can say that I have learned what basics within my nutrition I need to maintain to meet life's demands.

Through it all, I know what it's like to get caught up in the perfectionistic and "all or nothing" attitude. As a recovering perfectionist, I've learned there is so much room for growth, leaving perfectionism behind, making mistakes, and finding what's possible when you don't deprive yourself of certain experiences or foods. That's where I help most of my clients thrive--finding more joy in the messy middle of life.

I've navigated (and continue to navigate) those spaces. And I have no doubt I can help you navigate your nutrition, no matter where you are.

MY NUTRITION JOURNEY

From age 12 to 24, I was swimming for at least 20 hours weekly. I had a prolific swimming career, competing at the NCAA D1 Championships and the National Championships. During that time, I didn't pay attention to what I was eating as much as ensuring I was eating enough to make it through the training. So it was genuinely unsurprising how I needed to figure out how to eat once I stopped 20 hours weekly. I immediately gained weight once my swimming career was over.

Instead of accepting that my athletic goals had shifted, I tried to do all the things — keep up with an impossible training volume and schedule, constant dieting, calorie restriction, and no rest days. I was stuck in a neverending cycle of temporary weight loss with no glimpse of healthy habits or sustainable changes.

I've experienced many nutritional opportunities, from body recomposition goals for fat loss or mass gain, focusing on athletic performance, intuitive and mindful eating, and overall health and wellness. These experiences, as well as certifications and a consistent desire to continue learning, help me provide tremendous feedback to my clients.

Despite a demanding career as an attorney, being a single dad, and having an active social life with a lot of traveling, I've found a better way to maintain my health and activity through exercise and nutrition. I've let go of the need to do ALL THE THINGS. I've found the ability to maintain fitness in a way that feels good and keep a body composition I like. I LOVE fitness, and I believe it is absolutely okay to have some vain aesthetic goals, but it doesn’t need to consume our whole lives.

WHAT MY CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ME

before and after body transformation of trudi

TRUDI D., 45 YEARS OLD

I honestly can’t say enough about my time working with Zach. I have been in the fitness space for 10 years & can calculate macros for anyone but I needed help between the ears. He was my coach/therapist/friend and the amount of compassion & patience he showed me was truly incredible. Through the birth of my first child, a career change, and a global pandemic, Zach was right there by my side each week presenting ways to overcome what was in front of me. I can safely say, it was the best decision I made when I chose Zach to be my coach. After that year, I have transitioned to tracking once a week or so just to make sure I am taking in enough food & really listening to my body. My relationship with myself is ever-evolving and I am accepting of where I am today and focusing on what I can control. All of this would not be possible without Zach. If you’re looking for someone that will help change your life then look no further.
— Kyle H.
Even coaches need coaches. As a full-time Crossfit & nutrition coach I sought out nutrition coaching from Zach for two reasons. The first reason being, I wanted to see what it was like to be on the client side of nutrition coaching and the second reason being the big one, I wasn’t performing up to my standards. Being a former CrossFit Games team athlete, I had certain expectations of myself when it came to training and for many months leading up to me hiring Zach, it felt like I was spinning my wheels. Within the first two weeks, I had more energy coaching, my performance was increasing, I was way less irritable and even with increasing my calories the scale stayed the same.

Throughout the entire process, Zach was super responsive, funny and very understanding. I remember when I was working with Zach thinking to myself ‘Zach is the type of guy I would go grab a beer with.’ Although I never met him in person, his personality shines through his emails and social media and you can tell he is a person who loves doing what he does and loves to help those around him. I learned a lot about my own eating habits and I also learned a lot of great information that I have utilized with my own nutrition clients.

Here we are! almost a year later. My relationship with food has changed so much and that has immediately impacted my relationship with my body. Taking away the morality and just letting myself live is amazing. I don’t automatically think about dieting as soon as I have a bad body image day. I try to rub my belly or think something nice about myself when that happens. obviously not all days are good days and I still have some off moments, but I like the way I’ve learned to correct myself and move on. I can’t thank you enough! You’re incredible and we’re all so lucky to have had a piece of you in our lives!!!

I used to diet and wonder “what am I doing wrong, why aren’t I seeing the progress that I feel like I’m working so hard for” and now I will never have to do that again.

I can still eat all the foods I love, but I understand the importance of portion sizes and how my body reacts to different things. I’ve never felt better physically and mentally and would recommend this process to anyone regardless of their goals because it has made me realize how undereducated I was about food and I can only imagine how many others feel the same.

This has definitely been one of the most important investments I’ve made in myself and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
— BELLA, 25
For decades I had a complicated relationship with food due to purity culture, diet culture, and other distorted beliefs coming from high control religion.

Zach has a compassionate and personal approach where he centers his clients as the expert of their bodies and lives which is not only empowering but also a bit rebellious toward those old systems of belief (and control!). I’ve appreciated Zach’s assertive but gentle feedback, ideas and suggestions, and having him as someone to practice kind accountability. (That piece was also brand new to me as previously accountability was through the lens of shame, judgement, and criticism!)

As I wrap up my time with Zach, I am leaving with a greater sense of awareness of what my body needs, so much permission to feed myself in a sustainable way, and diminished fear and exhaustion of thinking so much about food...instead it’s been replaced by a renewed sense of actual living.

Zach redefines what it means to be a coach. Working with him means you’ll get much more than prescribed macro targets and the occasional pat on the back. Zach takes the time to listen to his clients, learn about what’s going on in their lives and help them work towards what good health means for them individually. In working with Zach, I learned so much about hormone health, sustainable habits, stress management, and self-compassion. I carry many of those lessons forward with me today, in nutrition and in life. Zach is all about big picture energy and his big picture passion shines through in his coaching.

Where do I even start? I reached out to Zach because I made the change from years of CrossFit to Olympic lifting, and I wanted to focus on getting stronger.

I’ve spent most of my life wanting to be smaller and being worried/obsessed with the number on the scale. After starting in a deficit for a while, Zach told me that the best way for me to gain strength was going to be to fuel my body and not spend extended periods of time in a deficit.

Zach only ever wanted the best for me, and was my biggest cheerleader. He gave me the confidence to be the best version of myself, even beyond the gym. I hit so many PRs in my time working with him.

I know I have the tools to keep building on everything I’ve learned over the last year and a half and I can’t recommend Zach enough. He will help you meet your goals and be your biggest champion. I came into this looking for help with nutrition and left so much more.

ASHLEIGH C., 39 YEARS OLD

I was in the best shape of my life and then...I found myself 8 weeks pregnant, moving across the country and starting two new jobs after 11 years of medical training. I found Zach when I was 3 months postpartum and I couldn’t be more grateful for his compassion, guidance, & real life style of coaching. I have learned so much in my almost 2 years of being coached by Zach. It is still a work in progress for me, but Zach has taught me that the scale is a number (sure, a useful one at times) but it sure as hell shouldn’t dictate your happiness or worth. If you want someone who focuses on you as a human, (not a weight, not how many workouts you do a week, not if your macros are perfect) then Zach is the coach for you. If you give your all, he will give it right back. I know I wouldn’t be where I am right now without him through some of the toughest times in my life to date.
— Jamie J.
Zach is so freaking talented. I love that he really focuses on positive reframing and being pleased with incremental slow habit changes. That’s a tremendous workload for someone who shows up the way he does. I like that Zach focuses on some of the things that men deal with that they don’t talk about. He is a great role model for men. For everybody! I’ll shout it from the rooftops that people need to come to him for real change.
— Sam B.
Working with Zach has been a life-changing experience. His incredible patience, sincerity and empathy are his superpowers that sit in fierce alignment with his knowledge, skills, & relentless work ethic. From the moment we met, I knew that I had accidentally stumbled into so much more than I could have hoped for. Zach truly cares, plain and simple. He cares about you, your goals and planning your own unique journey. Working with Zach, I was always left feeling like I was his only client, since he took so much time & consideration in his check-ins, feedback, & planning. He holds you accountable, but in a supportive & encouraging manner.

Working with Zach allowed me to shake free of so many long-standing beliefs & behaviors that no longer served me, or my goals. Zach had me eating WAY MORE food than I traditionally would have been eating and to say that my performance, sleep and overall well-being shot up is an understatement. Working with Zach has allowed me to totally reframe my approach to holistic health and lasting wellness.

before and after weight loss transformation

KATHRYN, 38 YEARS OLD

Over the years, I’ve worked with several coaches, but often they’ve approached my nutrition with a somewhat impersonal “eat this, not that” mentality.

Working with Zach has been a home run - exactly the type of coach I need, who has taken a genuine, personal interest in my journey and very quickly recognized who I am, my lifestyle, my daily stressors and challenges, and so many other things that aren’t typically labeled under “health and nutrition” but are critical factors in putting together a proper plan.  He has really felt like he is walking by my side on this nutrition journey, understanding how other factors in my life are playing a role, and helping to recognize when my own worst enemy is myself.

We are 7 months into coaching and have made tremendous, consistent progress - losing pounds and inches, feeling nourished and strong, noticeable changes in body composition, and possibly most important: eliminating perfectionism and gently keeping me on the right path. Zach is a coach that will truly work to understand the specific factors that make up your world and then walk by your side as you head towards your goals.
