7 HEALTHFUL TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS: AVOIDING HOLIDAY BURNOUT
THE HOLIDAY FIRE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE HOLIDAY BURNOUT
The holidays are a time of twinkling lights, cheerful gatherings, and copious amounts of joy-- and sometimes, stress. Consequently, you've probably found yourself frazzled amidst the festivities, wishing things were as simple as a Hallmark Christmas movie.
Despite the hustle, bustle, and festivities muscle, there are a few ways you can help avoid the typical holiday burnout and still prioritize yourself.
1. Embrace the Power of "No"
The holiday invites start rolling in, and suddenly, your calendar is covered with tinsel of events and to-dos. Remember, declining an invitation or two is ok if you're feeling overwhelmed. Prioritize quality over quantity, choosing events and gatherings that genuinely resonate with you. Your well-being comes first. You can focus on quality time with loved ones over the amount of events or parties you attend. Meaningful conversations and shared moments will fill your heart more than a jam-packed schedule.
2. Stick to Routine (as Much as Possible)
The holiday season often tosses our daily routines out the window. But don't throw in the towel just yet. While flexibility is vital, try to maintain some semblance of your routine. It can be a lifesaver. Try to stick to a basic schedule, even if it's less regimented than your usual routine. Keep up with your morning rituals, movement routines, and sleep schedule as best you can. A little consistency goes a long way in preventing burnout.
3. Self-care is Not Selfish
AGAIN. Self-care is not selfish. It's a necessity, especially during the holidays. Prioritize rest, relaxation, and recharging your batteries. Amidst the gift wrapping and carol singing, don't forget to gift yourself some "me" time. Sneak in a few minutes of journaling or meditation, or take a bubble bath. Listen to a favorite album or watch a holiday movie with a cup of coffee or tea. Go for a quiet walk in the crisp winter air, or curl up with a good book; make space for activities that bring you joy and peace. Take moments for yourself to breathe, reflect, and practice mindfulness. A few minutes of deep breathing or a short meditation can work wonders for your mental well-being.
4. Fuel Your Body Wisely
Amidst the gingerbread cookies and eggnog, don't forget to fuel your body with nourishing foods. Opt for balanced meals with plenty of veggies, lean proteins, and grains. These will stabilize your energy levels, making you more resilient to stress.
5. Hydration for the Win
Amidst the hustle and bustle, it's easy to forget the simplest things – like drinking enough water. Dehydration can leave you feeling sluggish and irritable, so keep a water bottle within arm's reach and sip away. Your emotional support water bottle may be more helpful than ever before.
6. Manage Expectations
Remember, perfection is overrated, especially during the holidays. Let go of unrealistic expectations, both for yourself and others. We all have that picture-perfect holiday scene in our heads, complete with harmonious family gatherings and Instagram-worthy moments. Reality check: life is beautifully messy, and holidays are no exception. Instead of striving for perfection, embrace the imperfections and focus on the moments of joy and connection. Your holiday meal doesn't have to be picture-perfect; you don't need to be the host(ess) with the most(est). Embrace the beauty of imperfection, and watch your stress levels drop.
7. Slow and Steady Wins the Race
As the year draws to a close, jumping headfirst into planning your New Year's resolutions is tempting. But pause for a moment. Instead of diving into new goals immediately, give yourself time to reflect on the year that was. What have you learned? What are you grateful for? This reflection can be a powerful way to set intentions and prioritize self-improvement moving forward. Savor the present before leaping into the future.
THE HOLIDAYS SHOULD BE A TIME OF JOY, NOT A SPRINT TO THE FINISH LINE WITH BURNOUT NIPPING
AT YOUR HEELS.
Prioritize self-care, maintain some routine, and remember that it's ok to say no when needed. The holiday season should be about joy, love, and self-care. Prioritize yourself, your well-being, and the moments that truly matter. Here's to a season filled with warmth, laughter, and the perfect balance of rest and revelry.
